Objective

After completing the course, the student
• analyses the key principles of the circular economy and its ecological, social, and economic benefits
• describes circular economy business models
• describes and compares practical actions that different stakeholders can take to promote the circular economy in the fashion industry.
• identifies which recycling methods are suitable for different raw material streams and describes materials that can be produced using different methods
• names the areas of circular economy standardisation and understand their objectives.

• Background and key principles of the circular economy
• The significance of the circular economy for society and fashion industry companies from a sustainable development perspective
• Circular economy business models
• Practical actions to promote the circular economy
• Standards related to the circular economy
• Use of recycled raw materials in the fashion industry and various options for recycling textile waste, including related processes

Students recognise the key operating principles of the circular economy and can name its ecological, social, or economic benefits. Students can describe circular economy business models at a general level and identify actions that promote the circular economy. They can name different recycling methods and available raw material streams. Students can name the areas covered by circular economy standardisation.

Students can explain the key operating principles of the circular economy and name its ecological, social, and economic benefits. Students can describe and provide examples of circular economy business models and compare actions that promote the circular economy. They can name recycling methods suitable for different raw material streams. Students can name the areas covered by circular economy standardisation and explain their significance from the perspective of the fashion industry.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can critically analyse the principles of the circular economy and its ecological, social, and economic benefits, considering also the challenges. Students can evaluate the suitability of circular economy business models for different actors in the fashion industry and present well-founded development suggestions. They can analyse and critically evaluate the actions of different stakeholders to promote the circular economy. They can name and compare recycling methods suitable for different raw material streams. Students can evaluate the significance of circular economy standardisation for the industry.
