Objective
The aim of the course is to develop the student's ability to use improvisation as a form of musical expression and as a teaching tool.
After completing the course, the student
• is able to implement and apply improvisation as a versatile form of musical expression and as a development tool
• uses the key principles of improvisation in the development of musical interaction, reaction speed and time management
• creatively uses different elements and phenomena of music in improvisation
• strengthens their musical memory, imagination and dramatic awareness through improvisation
• can use improvisation as a pedagogical tool and applies it creatively in teaching situations.

• Different improvisation exercises and techniques according to the student’s specialisation
• Principles and methods of improvisation
• Development of musical interaction and responsiveness
• Musical phenomena in improvisation
• Improvisation as a pedagogical tool
Qualifications
Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music in Finland or equivalent skills and knowledge.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student
• is able to improvise alone and in different ensembles and to use improvisation techniques in pedagogical work
• is able to produce a variety of improvisation exercises and techniques in different styles both for their own development and for pedagogical purposes.
