Objective

The student
• is able to write music and lyrics both individually and in small groups, according to given assignments and independently
• can write lyrics in their native language and one foreign language
• is able to distinguish the professional and artistic characteristics of different popular music styles
• can listen to and study their own and others' music and lyrics analytically and apply the acquired knowledge to their own music-making
• can actively and proactively participate in a group, discuss, and provide constructive feedback on the work of other group members
• can set goals for their own and their group's activities and ensure they are met as agreed
• is able to communicate about their music-making fluently, both verbally, in writing, and through recordings
• can work according to given assignments and schedules
• is able to prepare high-quality demo recordings of their music.

Content

• Seminar work and completing exercises individually and in small groups
• Formal structures, melody, harmony, and rhythm in Western popular music
• Auditory and literary analysis of music
• Songwriting methods
• Creative writing and lyric writing in Finnish and English
• Writing music and lyrics independently and on the basis of assignments
• Preparing demo recordings of their own music

Qualifications

The student
• is able to write music and lyrics both individually and in small groups
• has a command of various methods of music and lyric writing and is capable of applying them to their own song writing
• can listen to and study music pieces analytically and apply the acquired knowledge to their own music-making
• can define the impact of arrangement and orchestration on musical expression
• is able to operate an audio workstation at a basic level and can prepare demo recordings of their own music.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student
• can write music and lyrics both individually and in small groups, according to given assignments and independently
• can write lyrics in their native language and one foreign language
• is able to distinguish the professional and artistic characteristics of different popular music styles
• can listen to and study their own and others' music and lyrics analytically and apply the acquired knowledge to their own music-making
• can work in a group, discuss, and provide constructive feedback on the work of other group members
• works in a goal-oriented manner according to given assignments and schedules
• can communicate about their music-making fluently, both verbally and in writing, and is able to prepare high-quality demo recordings of their music.
