Objective
After completing the course, the student
• can clearly outline the development of rhythm and blues music
• can relate the history of rhythm and blues music to the history of music as a whole
• can describe the different periods and styles of rhythm and blues music
• can search for information on the history of rhythm and blues music
• can identify, through listening, the aesthetics and characteristics of rhythm and blues music and its periods
• is able to work independently and in groups
• can apply their knowledge critically and creatively in their professional activities.
Content
• The development of rhythm and blues music from the 1940s to the present day
• The history of individuals and groups and the main events in rhythm and blues music, from the point of view of musical and music-aesthetic phenomena
• Listening examples and exercises as well as written material
• The technology of the period and the significance of rhythm and blues music n time and society
• Lectures, independent work and group work
Qualifications
Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music in Finland or equivalent skills and knowledge.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student
• identifies key artists and compositions and styles in rhythm and blues music from listening samples
• identifies the characteristics of the different periods of rhythm and blues music
• can search for information on the history of rhythm and blues music and apply this knowledge critically and creatively in their professional activities
• is able to work independently and in groups.
