Objective
The student
• masters the basic technical aspects required for writing music: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture
• can analyse and creatively produce stylistically appropriate musical compositions
• can learn and notate music by ear and is capable of independent work
• is prepared to continue with the Music Theory and Ear Training 4 course.
Content
Music theory
• Writing chord progressions with triads, seventh chords, and extended chords
• Writing accompanying melodies (polyphony)
• Writing melody with chordal harmony (homophony)
• Introduction to modal harmonisation
• Structural forms across different eras
Ear training
• Major and minor melodies with chromatic alterations
• Other melodies, e.g., modal and blues scales
• Two-part polyphony
• Chord progressions with chromaticism
• Modulation to different keys
Qualifications
Completion of Music Theory and Ear Training 2 and Rhythm Studies 2 or equivalent knowledge and skills.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student
• is proficient with the basic technical aspects required for writing music: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture
• can analyse and creatively produce stylistically appropriate musical compositions
• demonstrates their ability to learn and notate music by ear and is capable of independent work.
