Objective

The student broadens their pedagogical understanding and ability to function as a teacher of the instrument of their specialization, as a band instructor, and as an expert in the general objectives of basic art education. The student is able to develop and apply various working and teaching methods based on the needs of learners and different working environments. The student is able to act as a music director of various vocal and instrumental ensembles.

The student is able to specify the importance of music education and different conceptions of learning and teaching, and is able to convey them to the learner, the community and society. The student is able to reflect on their own musical background, thinking, values, choices and strengths. The student is able to describe and present their skills and the development of their professional profile in writing, in videos and on recordings, for example in their professional ePortfolio. The student is able to develop their own professional skills using networks.

Content

Common instructional content for basic art education (composition, improvisation, music listening and conceptualization), methods of creative group activities and their practical application. Basics of ensemble pedagogy and teaching practice as well as visits to other educational institutions related to the student’s specialization. In-depth instrument or ensemble guidance, depending on the student's choice. Independent learning assignments. Completion of a professional ePortfolio or equivalent illustration of one’s pedagogical competence.

Prerequisites

The student is able to utilize theoretical, practical and experiential knowledge and skills in planning and implementing individual, ensemble or group instruction,as well as reflect on their own experiences as part of their musical activities and utilize this in their pedagogical development. The student is able to create meaningful learning environments using functional methods in group teaching within the scope of basic art education, even without their own instrument.

The student is able to guide ensembles (band, chamber music ensemble, vocal ensemble, choir) in education and performance with an encouraging and supportive pedagogical approach. The student is able to specify factors that influence musical interaction and learning situations and explain their importance in the learning environments they encounter. The student is able to form functional ensembles, and select, arrange or compose suitable repertoire for them, and guide players of different instruments in the group.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to guide the common content for basic art education
(composing, improvising, music listening and conceptualization). The student can conduct ensembles and function as a music director of vocal and instrumental ensembles. The student is able to use methods of music education in a variety of ways in both planning and practice. The student is able to analyze various learning situations and reflect on their own pedagogical skills and development. The student is able to detail their own competence in a flexible way with the help of ePortfolio or equivalent.
