Objective

The student is able to make music creatively in a small ensemble. The student can differentiate the roles of the instruments in the ensemble and is able to arrange and orchestrate music for them. The student can rehearse the ensemble and act as an active and creative member in it. The student knows how to make music with their own instrument and the band by means of improvisation. The student is able to communicate their own music making orally, in writing, and by means of recordings. The student can explore and realize the music of others by making transcriptions and can define the significance of good musical notation in conveying musical information. The student knows the basics of musical notation software. The student is goal-directed and is able to prepare a concert production as a member of a group.

Content

Writing music for a small ensemble. Ensemble rehearsals. Using one’s own instrument as an improvisation device in a small ensemble. Basic use of notation software and preparing sheet music. Exploring the components of music by means of transcription.

Prerequisites

Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music or equivalent skills and knowledge.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to follow agreed schedules and submit their assignments on time. The student can work as an active member of the group and give constructive feedback on the contributions of the other group members. The student presents and argues their own contribution to the group as agreed and is able to receive feedback and reflect on their own performance.
