Descriptions
Graduates of the Degree Programme in Live Performance Technology work in various roles related to the technical planning, management and execution of professional live performances. They have extensive knowledge of lighting and sound engineering as well as video and stage technology, and are familiar with the tools and practices of technical planning and execution of productions. They work mainly in theatre and opera houses, cultural and community centres, concerts and festivals, production planning agencies and in international performance productions in the planning, execution, sales and installation of event technology.
Live performance technology graduates are constantly prepared to adopt new technological solutions and to take on the challenges of new production models and performance formats. They perform skilfully in the technical production of both live and virtual events. Designing and building reliable and robust systems for performances, smooth operation of equipment and fast problem solving are part of their day-to-day work. They are innovative and creative in the fast-changing environment of event and theatre technology and know how to develop performing arts environments. Their studies provide the skills for continuous learning and comprehensive understanding of the ever-evolving field of work. The studies of this diverse profession make use of project-based learning and offer the opportunity for broad professional networking.
At the core of the studies are
• wide-ranging skills in lighting and sound engineering as well as in video and stage technology
• safety in performing arts environments
• technical-artistic expertise
• technical planning and production and technical documentation
• the development and study of the field in the context of a thesis
• project management and managerial work
In rapidly changing work, the emphasis is on learning skills, the constant development of technological skills and the ability to work responsibly in a work community. Making socially, ecologically and economically sustainable choices is fundamental in the cultural sector. Students of live performance technology build their professional profiles through elective and advanced studies and projects. Finnish expertise in the event and theatre technology sector is internationally recognised as being at the highest level, and students are supported in internationalisation both in their studies and through possible student exchanges or international work placements.
The curriculum is composed of
• basic studies 30 ECTS
• joint studies in the field of culture 5 ECTS
• profile studies in working life skills 5 ECTS
• basic studies in live performance technology 25 ECTS
• professional studies 30 ECTS
• technical planning and production studies 20 ECTS
• project studies 30 ECTS
• advanced professional studies 30 ECTS
• advanced elective studies 10 ECTS
• elective studies 10 ECTS, and
• internship and bachelor's thesis 45 ECTS.
The basic studies consist of studies related to learning skills, the basics of research for development and language studies. The core curriculum in live performance technology build the basis of professional competence through knowledge of the performing arts and from a mathematical-technical perspective. The professional studies in live performance technology provide a wide range of knowledge of technical systems and offer the opportunity to extend and supplement technical skills in a variety of ways. Technical design and production studies provide the skills required for the design and technical documentation of theatre and event technology. Project studies deepen and apply knowledge in technical-artistic processes. Project studies are usually carried out in close cooperation with the industry. Sustainability is part of the core competences.
In advanced professional studies, students have the option of taking courses that allow them to reinforce their knowledge of lighting or sound technology or to expand their technical knowledge. In professional skills studies where the student can develop their professional profile, the student develops a broad range of professional skills. The degree also includes 10 credits of free elective studies, which allow for the study of multidisciplinary content.
The thesis is a work-oriented, independent development project carried out by the student at the end of the studies. The work can also be carried out in pairs or small groups.
Development
