Objective

The student is able to describe the organisation of infection control in Finland and explain the legislation governing clinical microbiological laboratory activities. Is able to assess pre-analytical and analytical factors related to clinical microbiology and to apply them in their work. Identifies the importance of quality control and is able to adhere to it in bacteriology and mycology examinations. Is able to name the most common aerobic bacteria, their characteristics and the infectious diseases they cause. Is able to perform the most common clinical bacteriology tests and understands their principles. Is able to assess the reliability and significance of results. Understands the importance of genetics in bacteriological examinations. Is familiar with clinically significant yeasts and filamentous fungi and understands their testing methods. Is familiar with the key antimicrobial drugs, their effect and resistance mechanisms. Is able to work safely and aseptically. Is able to take account of the principles of sustainable development in clinical microbiology.
