Objective

After completing the course, you will be able to use simulation software to analyse the hygrothermal performance of a structure. You will be able to compute the U value of a building part containing thermal bridges. You will be able to study the simultaneous transfer of heat and moisture in complicated geometries and varying weather conditions. You will be able to investigate the hygrothermal performance of a structure during its life span, assess moisture risks, identify processes that have led to a moisture problem and develop moisture management plans.

Content

Simulation software
U value of a building part containing thermal bridges
Drying of a damp structure or fresh concrete in different conditions
Hygrothermal performance of a building part in varying weather conditions: effects of solar radiation, wind and rain
Evaluation of various factors affecting the performance of a building part and comparing alternative structural solutions
Assessment of mold and condensation risk and identifying a critical structure
Presentation and analysis of computational results

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

You are able to use building physics simulation software and analyse the results in simple cases by making use of hygrothermal models available and appropriate to the situation at hand.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

You are able to use building physics software and analyse the results in cases essentially familiar to you.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

You are able to use building physics software and analyse the results open-mindedly and critically in new and demanding cases.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You are able to use building physics simulation software and analyse the results in simple cases by making use of hygrothermal models available and appropriate to the situation at hand.
