Applied Project in Biotechnology and Chemical EngineeringLaajuus (15 ECTS)
Course unit code: TX00BP08
General information
- Credits
- 15 ECTS
Objective
The main purpose of the course is to deepen the student´s knowledge of the field of biotechnology and chemical engineering. The student gets familiar with the process activities, and the different alternatives thereto, in the fields of biotechnology and food engineering, chemical engineering, and materials and surface engineering. He or she identifies the industrial production processes and can apply and utilize the gained knowledge in his or her prospective work assignments.
The student acquaints himself or herself with one or more product groups of the field and with the properties and production process of the respective products.
After completing the course the student will understand how the physical and chemical properties affect the quality of the end product and know methods for analyzing the product and for controlling the overall product quality.
He or she is familiar with the main stages of the production process and with companies that operate in the field.
Content
At the beginning of the course, the student explores different parts of the Finnish market in the field of biotechnology and food engineering, chemical engineering and materials and surface engineering. He or she chooses one or two products according to his or her interest and performs a study on this product and its production alternatives. He or she finds out about the market for the product and different process solutions. He or she examines the product with practical experiments.
The student learns the main physical and chemical measuring and monitoring methods; he or she gets familiar with the principles and the practical applications of the methods from a process monitoring and quality control point of view. He or she learns how to estimate the uncertainty of measurement. The student gets acquainted with mathematical formulas needed for understanding physical and chemical phenomena and how to estimate the measuring uncertainty. The project is implemented in a project group and the results are reported.
