Descriptions

The curriculum enhances the studentcentered higher level education by offering optional studies and flexibility. It enables the possibility to quickly react to the changing demands of the professional life and enhances the ecosystemic learning in national and international networks.

The studies consist of common Metropolia and social and healthcare studies and the nursing degrees own studies. Optional studies are 15 credits. The course selection is designed for the student to be able to study 30 credits per semester.

The basis of learning are the incidents rising from the professional environment, and the need to find evidence-based solutions for them. Variable pedagogic solutions are used in teaching, including many possibilities of digital learning. Competence deepens and expands in different learning environments that support learning. Part of the studies are done in the Metropolia health- and welfare services, that are offered to local customers. These services are provided by teachers and students from various areas of expertise. In the independent learning environments students have the possibility to enhance their clinical competence in various skills.

The student is responsible for his own learning. The competence of the students is evaluated during the studies in the following areas: professional knowledge, professional skills and actions, ethical commitment, co-operation and development. The student will receive the capability for continuous professional development and further studies.

The curriculum responds to the degree competencies, professional knowledge and development needs as well as the demands of national and international co-operations. It highlights the studentcentered as well as learning- and competencebased thinking. The competence goas tell the student, what kind of competence is expected of him, and they help him to evaluate his own learning. Competence goals are designed in a joint effort by the professional sector and universities of applied science. They give the professional sector a picture of the competence and capabilities of the student to work in different areas. It also helps to recognize and approve previously acquired studies, competencies and international degrees.

Internationalization is a part of the studies, and it enables the student to take part in a study exchange program or home internationalization, such as mutual studies with Finnish- and English- speaking degree programs or online studies from open international sources.

The emergency care degree program of Metropolia gives you a broad competence in the prehospital care area. The degree enables you to work as an emergency care provider (ALS paramedic) in the network of urgent care services, in co-operation with other agencies. The core of the degree is the emergency patient in prehospital environment and multiagency co-operation. You learn to assess the need for treatment in non-emergency patients and to guide them to the appropriate service for help. To work in the prehospital area you need to be able to make quick and sound decisions, to perform well under pressure and to have good psychological and physical health.

The degree is a professionally oriented bachelor’s degree (EQF6). It meets the criteria set by the Finnish National Framework for Qualifications (FiNQF) for UAS degrees as well as the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for degrees and other competences. It meets the requirements of the European Union Professional Qualification Directives (2005/36/EC, 2013/55/EU). The qualification provides eligibility to apply for a higher UAS degree or a master's degree at universities and other higher education institutions. The degree offers a wide range of employment opportunities, for example in specialized healthcare, primary care and the private healthcare sector. The nursing degree also provides the opportunity to work in a variety of specialist positions, organisations and international assignments.

Graduating from the degree program enables the graduate to be employed in a wide variety of nurse and paramedic positions. The graduate can work for example in an ambulance, ICU and high dependency units, in the ER or as self-employed. The graduate can work as a prehospital care expert in various multiprofessional teams.

Development

Curriculum development for the nursing degree programme is carried out both regionally and nationally. The competence description of a graduate nurse (key competences, objectives and contents) has been produced in a national cooperation between all universities of applied sciences that train nurses. The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with working life, the advisory board, teachers and students.

Further information

The contents on artificial intelligence and information security (0.5 credits in total) are included in the course Higher Education and Career Planning SX00GA99.
The course, developed in cooperation with U!REKA, is integrated in the course Basic Practice Clinical Nursing 2 SX00GB03.
