• Structure and classification of enzymes
• The role and function of enzymes in biological systems
• Enzyme kinetics and factors affecting enzyme activity

2. Bioenergetics
• Principles of bioenergetics
• Role of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in cellular energy storage and utilisation

3. Energy metabolism
• Metabolic pathways involved in the production and utilisation of energy in cells
• Catabolic and anabolic pathways such as glycolysis, citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation

4. Innate and acquired immunity
• Innate and acquired immune response and their differences
• Different mechanisms of the immune system, such as cellular uptake, antibody production and immunological memory

5. Biochemical research methods
• Commonly used research methods in biochemistry

• has a basic knowledge of ATP, bioenergetics, and metabolic pathways
• has a limited understanding of immune systems and immune response mechanisms.

The student
• has a solid understanding of enzyme classification, function, and kinetics
• has a clear grasp of ATP in energy metabolism and metabolic pathways
• can distinguish between innate and acquired immunity, and understands immune mechanisms
• is able to use biochemistry research methods.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• has an in-depth knowledge of enzyme structure, function, and kinetics
• has a solid understanding of bioenergetics, ATP’s role, and energy metabolism pathways
• thoroughly understands immune systems and research methods.
