General information
- Credits
- 5 cr
Objective
Students will learn the theoretical background and practical skills to perform a chemical separation method. Students will learn the basic concepts and principles of separation, focusing on liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC).
Content
• Principles of chromatography
• Operational principles of gas (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC)
• Chromatographic analysis and reporting
Qualifications
Fundamentals of Chemistry 1, Orientation to the Field and Studies
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The students demonstrate that they have achieved the objectives of the core competences and use the concepts and knowledge consistently. The students will be able to perform chromatography-based analyses as instructed and prepare work reports that include all required sections. Results are reported with the correct accuracy.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students will understand the influence of measurement conditions on the analysis using GC and LC techniques. Students will work carefully and purposefully when performing analyses. The report is clear in structure and language. Students are able to draw conclusions independently and the results include an estimate of the measurement uncertainty.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students will be able to apply chromatographic separation techniques to different analytes. Students will be able to modify measurement conditions to improve separation in analyses using GC and LC techniques. Students will work independently, on their own initiative and with a sense of purpose. They can plan and schedule their work in a rational way. The report language and the review of results are excellent.
