Objective

The student
• masters the basic techniques of genetic engineering at theoretical and practical level
• understands the importance of DNA analysis in different applications, such as cloning, personal identification or GMO analysis
• is familiar with the legislation on genetic engineering and has considered ethical issues in this field
• is familiar with the basics of bioinformatics.

Content

• Basic methods of cloning
• DNA amplification and sequencing techniques, basics of DNA bioinformatics, RNAi mechanisms and genome editing
• Ethics in genetic engineering, genetic engineering legislation and risk analysis
• Isolation, purification and characterisation of nucleic acids in practical laboratory work

The student
• has a basic understanding of genetic engineering principles
• needs guidance with techniques and data analysis
• has limited proficiency with bioinformatics tools.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• has a good understanding of genetic engineering and techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis
• is able to analyse data and apply critical thinking
• has a solid understanding of bioinformatics and use of tools.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• has an excellent understanding of genetic engineering and complex techniques
• masters analytical skills and problem-solving
• demonstrates advanced bioinformatics knowledge and use of tools for data analysis.
