Objective

Students will be familiar with the contents of their degree programme and the job opportunities in the laboratory sector. They will get to know the companies and actors in their field. They will be familiar with the main guidelines in their field, such as safety guidelines and labour legislation.

They will identify their own strengths and areas for improvement and know how to develop their learning and study skills. The student will be able to use key office software tools. The student knows the main guidelines, rules and study practices of the Metropolia UAS. The student is familiar with the student services of the Metropolia UAS and the information systems relevant to studies.

Students will learn to work safely in the laboratory and know the laboratory practices of Metropolia UAS. After completing this course, students will be prepared to participate in other laboratory courses.

Content

Introduction to laboratory work:

- safe working practices in the laboratory and protective equipment
- safe handling of chemicals and waste
- basic laboratory equipment and measuring instruments
- fire-fighting equipment
- water used in laboratories
- calibration of pipettes

After completing the course, the student will know the topics covered in the course objectives. The student must pass the laboratory safety exam and do the required laboratory work.
