The student
• knows the steps of a systematic product development process and understands the costs during the product life cycle
• knows the methods of brainstorming
• understands the importance of product development and environmental considerations as part of a company's strategy
• understands the importance of industrial design in the product development process.

• Ideation and conceptualisation methods
• Use of standards and the EU Machinery Directive
• Patents and patent databases
• Modularisation
• Linking R&D activities to company strategy
• Life-cycle thinking and life-cycle product costs
• Industrial design

The student
• recognises the different stages of the product development process
• can use at least one ideation method well
• can evaluate product development concepts
• knows the existence of machine directive and industry standards as part of the product development process.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• knows the different stages of the product development process
• can use at least two ideation methods well
• can evaluate and create product development concepts
• can use machine design and industry standards in the product development process.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• masters the different stages of the product development process
• can use several ideation methods well
• can evaluate and create product development concepts
• can use machine design, industry standards, patent databases and industrial design as part of the product development process.

The student
