Objective

On completion of the course, the student:
• is aware of the contents and systems of building services in a construction project
• recognises the main parts and common alternatives of the HVAC systems in a building
• knows the structure and installation procedures of AC devices, piping and other building services equipment
• can interpret HVAC drawings in order to install the systems correctly
• knows the structure, parts and installation arrangements of the electrical system of a building
• can interpret electrical drawings in a construction project.

Content

• Contents and systems of building services in a construction project
• Main parts and common alternatives of the HVAC systems of a building
• Structure and installation of the HVAC devices, piping and equipment of a building, such as water, heating and sewage
• Structure and installation of the air conditioning devices, piping and service equipment of a building
• Interpreting HVAC drawings in order to install the systems correctly
• Structure, parts and installation arrangements of the electrical system of a building, including switchboards, regulations and safety in installation work, safe operation and getting electricity on a construction site
• Interpreting electrical drawings in order to build the electrical system correctly

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• is aware of the role of building services in a construction project
• is able to list the main parts and common alternatives of the HVAC systems in a building
• is aware of the structure and installation procedures of AC devices, piping and other building services equipment
• is able to interpret HVAC drawings with assistance in order to install the systems correctly
• knows the role of electrical system in a building project
• is able to interpret electrical drawings with assistance in a construction project.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student:
• understands the role of building services in a construction project
• recognises the main parts and common alternatives of the HVAC systems in a building
• knows the structure and installation procedures of AC devices, piping and other building services equipment
• is able to interpret HVAC drawings independently in order to install the systems correctly
• knows the role of electrical system in a building project
• is able to interpret electrical drawings independently in a construction project.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student is able to design the HVAC and electrical systems for a simple building.
