Objective

After completing the course, the student
• is able to communicate in a business environment in Finnish and convey information related to working life or their professional field both in writing and verbally
• recognises the differences between formal and informal language styles
• understands texts related to working life and their field, and can discuss and produce clear, structured text on these topics
• knows how to develop their language skills independently.

The student's language proficiency level is B1.2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

Content

• Oral and written communication situations in working life (phone and email communication, customer service situations, reporting)
• Situational variation in language (differences between formal and informal language styles)
• Expanding vocabulary related to one’s professional field
• Understanding and producing texts related to one’s professional field
• Review of basic structures in the Finnish language (e.g., rections, verb tenses, conjunctions, sentence types)
• Basics of language revision (punctuation, capital letters, compound words) and written language structures (e.g., recognising participles and equivalent clauses)
• Strengthening language learning strategies

Qualifications

Prior knowledge of Finnish at a minimum level of B1.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (e.g., completion of Suomen mestari 1 - 2 or equivalent studies, such as Finnish 4/Suomi 4).

Target level: B1.2. The course also provides guidance and tools for achieving language proficiency at level B2.

Additional Information for Students This Finnish as a second language course is for degree students in business studies at Metropolia.

Studying requires strong study skills and considerable independent work, including reading and writing texts and studying grammar and vocabulary.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
• has achieved the objectives of the course to a satisfactory level
• is able to identify, define and use concepts and models in the subject area of the course
• understands the conditions and principles of the development of expertise.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• has achieved the objectives of the course well, although there are still areas where knowledge and skills need to be improved
• has a good understanding of the concepts and models of the subject matter of the course and is able to carry out a reasoned analysis
• is able to apply what they have learned in leisure, learning and working life situations
• understands the importance of expertise in business and is able to analyse their own expertise.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks
• has an excellent command of the concepts and models of the subject matter of the course
• is able to analyse clearly and reasonably and propose practical development measures
• has a good ability to apply what they have learned in leisure, learning and working life situations
• is able to analyse expertise in business and their own development towards expertise.
