Descriptions
Degree programme in European Business Administration, 210 ECTS.
Bachelor of Business Administration BBA
Day-time studies in English
The Degree Programme in European Business Administration is the oldest double degree programme in Finland, launched in 1993. It offers students a possibility to complete a BBA degree not only from Metropolia, but also from one of Metropolia's partner universities in Europe. Students must include an exchange study period in their studies. In order to receive graduation certificate from both Metropolia and the partner university, the student will have to successfully complete the requirements of both institutions, including minimum 60 ECTS of studies in the partner institution.
The programme is designed in partnership with highly rated business schools from around Europe, with the aim of providing students a solid foundation in international business studies, in a strongly international learning environment and with attractive work experience opportunities. All courses are delivered in English.
After an introduction to general business subjects, students are provided more advanced second-year courses. Greater emphasis is placed on the development of analytical skills and understanding of the wider business environment. ICT and data analytics skills, critical and innovative thinking and project management skills are developed throughout the programme. European Business Administration degree programme graduate also understands the principles of sustainable development and is able to operate responsibly in a multicultural and international operating environment and network.
Students are also required to learn an additional language (French, German or Spanish for Finnish students, Finnish for non-natives) and to complete a six-month work placement and Bachelor's Thesis. Specialization studies e.g. in marketing, human resource and strategic management, finance, business intelligence or supply chain management, are completed at the partner university. The exchange study period usually takes place during the 3rd year of studies.
A graduate of this degree programme can expect to be offered attractive work opportunities internationally. Those wishing to continue their studies to Master’s level are well prepared to do so immediately or after two years of work experience, if they aspire the professional Master's degree from a Finnish UAS.
Studying in this degree programme involves a high degree of commitment from the very start. Completion of courses must be punctual in order to qualify for the exchange year, which is a compulsory part of the degree. The European Business Administration students will be studying in a very international environment, as many participants come from around the world. By experiencing such a working environment, students can expect to be offered attractive work opportunities internationally.
Structure of the studies:
Core business studies including orientation to business studies 60 ECTS
Professional studies including Innovation Project and Research methods 30 ECTS
Language and communication studies 15 ECTS
Specialization studies 45 ECTS
Elective studies 15 ECTS
Work placement 30 ECTS
Bachelor´s thesis 15 ECTS
Development
The EBA Curriculum 2020 has been updated in collaboration with other bachelor-level degree programmes offered at Metropolia Business School, and according to the guidelines and instructions from Metropolia, including the potential offered by Innovation Hubs. In updating the course descriptions, the renewed NQF 6 level competence framework have been taken into account, eg. technological competences and digitalisation, even stronger emphasis on ethical and multicultural competences, or more collaboration with working life to enhance the working life skills of a student.
Some of the European partners as well as all the EBA students currently studying at the partner institutions have been contacted for ideas for improvement. The importance of Innovation Projects as a tool for increased company collaboration and project involvement was both praised and highlighted. The students felt they were very well prepared for their studies abroad; to meet the requirements of ten partner universities is a cornerstone of the DD programme. The elements are there in the core business studies in the 1st year and the professional studies in the 2nd year, it seems. Therefore, changes were made to the sequence and timing of courses, rather than contents.
A modular structure to better serve the incoming degree students (the 3rd-year incoming electives) has been improved and made more visual. In doing so, collaboration across all business programmes is of key importance.
The separate offering, erilliset opintokokonaisuudet in Finnish, will be designed each spring for the incoming DD students, serving the needs of the entire Business School and their degree-seeking and exchange students.
The Metropolia level descriptions for bachelor thesis and the required methodological studies are easy to observe in the EBA degree programme. All of this has been agreed with the European partner institutions in the DD agreements. In some cases, the incoming EBA students do their Bachelor Thesis under the guidance and according to the rules and requirements of Metropolia, sometimes under joint supervision.
