Information Technology (in English): Smart IoT Systems Study Path

Code: TXL20S1

Degree:
Bachelor of Engineering

Degree title:
Bachelor of Engineering, BEng

Credits:
240 ects

Duration:
4 years (240 cr)

Start semester:
Autumn 2020

Descriptions

The extent of the engineering education is 240 ECTS credits. First year of studies is organised in four study themes. They provide fundamental knowledge and skills in the field of ICT and also introduce the study paths in Information Technology Degree Programme. This enables a student to choose the most suitable study path for him/her. Mathematics, physics, computer science as well as English and business skills are integrated in the study themes in order to enable phenomenon based learning. Finnish for Foreigners courses are offered as separate courses. The first year of studies aims to build a solid theoretical and technological base for professional studies.

During the 2nd year, students will focus to develop and further their professional competence. IT Degree Programme offers two majors:
- Mobile Solutions
- Smart IoT Systems

The 3rd year of studies will begin with professional studies which will deepen the engineering skills and theoretical knowledge in his/her major. Students majoring in Smart IoT Systems have a possibility to deepen their knowledge towards either Embedded IoT Devices or IoT and Networks. The content of the studies is based on the working life and partly phenomenon based learning. Some of the studies, if applicable, are connected to Metropolia's innovation hubs and projects there. During spring term of the 3rd year, students have a possibility to complete elective studies or to study in one of the many partner universities as an exchange student.

The 4th, i.e the final year of studies will provide the multidisciplinary innovation project which is a project often completed in a multidisciplinary project team requiring strong engineering skills and team working skills. The learning process will culminate in the Final Year Project (Bachelor’s Thesis).

Structure of the degree (240 ECTS):
- Orientation to Information Technology 60 ECTS
- Fundamental Professional Studies 30 ECTS
- Advanced Professional Studies 60 ECTS
- Innovation Studies 15 ECTS
- Language Studies 10 ECTS
- Elective Studies 20 ECTS
- Work Placement 30 ECTS
- Bachelor's Thesis 15 ECTS

Objective

The competence matrix and the descriptions of the IT competences and Metropolia's generic competences are attached to this curriculum.

Description

Smart IoT Systems major study path gives you an insight to the embedded computer systems and cloud services including Internet of Things. After the second year students can focus more in detail to embedded IoT development or network and cloud computing. Embedded IoT devices are devices with open source operating system. They for example control industrial processes or collect IoT data for cloud services. Understanding basics of cloud services is important. Students learn professional embedded development practices and tools by participating development projects during their study. Graduates will work for example in product research and development departments, as a technical specialists or as a software developer in various ICT companies. IoT and Networks studies give student an insight to the world of computer network technologies, server systems and cloud services. You can put the learnt theory into practice in our data communication laboratory which are based on IP-networking, server systems and mobile networks. Courses developed co-operation with the leading networking equipment manufacturers gives excellent skill set for secure network and server system design, implementation and maintaining. Students may work in various ICT related positions after the graduation such as a project manager, network specialist, cloud system administrator, ICT security specialist or technical specialist.
