Descriptions

The Master of engineering provides skills that require special expertise on workplace development tasks. The degree gives the same qualifications for public office as universities and other higher education institutions completed science master's degree. The specialization studies are:

• HVAC technology and
• Electrical Building Services

The studies consist of compulsory studies (15 credits), advanced studies (10 credits) and elective studies (5 credits). In addition, the studies include a thesis (30 credits), which is made in principle to the employer. The focus of compulsory studies is on low carbon and energy efficiency of buildings, life cycle costs and environmental impacts, renewable energy production and integration of production methods, regulation and control of intelligent energy systems and research capabilities.

Students may choose either the HVAC technology or electrical engineering. The main themes in HVAC technology are energy production, recycling and storage with heat pumps, and modeling and simulation of indoor climate and energy production systems. The main topics of electrical building services are the building automation and control, information and security systems of buildings and their comprehensive know-how and integration.

Training will be conducted multi-form studies. The studies can be completed while working. The studies include the nearby courses, small group work and distance learning. Classroom education is on Thursday (evening), on Friday and possibly on Saturday. Contact teaching periods are 9 - 10 times per semester. Teaching is organized in such a way that the degree can be completed in two years.

Development

A steering group in degree program of Building Services Engineering is involved in planning the degree programme and developing the curriculum. The group consists of representatives from the companies and associations, students and lecturers of the degree programme. The rules and regulations of the Ministry of Environment concerning competence requirements for planners and energy efficiency of buildings have influenced the curriculum revised in 2015. The Metropolia Master’s network improves curriculums continuously. All thesis are connected to development projects of students’ employers. Quest lecturers from companies are giving lectures in numerous courses.

Objective

The student understands the nearly zero-energy building design process and technical solutions, and is able to design and dimension HVAC, electrical and automation systems on them. The student is able to calculate the energy use in the building. In addition, student is able to make the life cycle calculations, to explain the principles of environmental impact calculations and the sustainable development of buildings and the use of dynamic simulation programs. The student is also able to describe the stages of research and development project and plan the project and report it.
