Descriptions
The Master’s Degree is intended for those who have already entered the job sector, wishing to have transferable skills to develop working life. A Master’s Degree from a university of applied sciences provides the same qualifications for public office, for example, as a Master’s Degree from a research university or another higher educational institution.
Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering has a specialization option renovation. The content of the degree program is based on working life-oriented learning and partly phenomenal learning. The phenomena to be addressed are e.g. climate change and sustainable development. Study assignments are usually related to students' assignments. Some of the studies relate, where applicable, to Metropolia's innovation hubs and projects that may be ongoing there.
The studies contain common core requirement studies (10 ECTS), specialization studies (15 ECTS) and elective studies (5 ECTS). Also Master’s thesis (30 ECTS) is included in the degree.
During studies offered renovation courses are old buildings are structures, building physics, deterioration of structures and condition assessments and renovation and construction work methods.
Elective studies give possibilities to direct studies according to own career and development plan. There is a possibility to a substitution with studies of other Master’s degree programmes of Metropolia or Master’s degree studies in other universities. There are courses of building information modelling in renovation and project management in the Civil Engineering Master's Programme.
The studies are organized as part-time studies and the Master’s degree programme has been designed to enable working alongside studies. The studies consist of contact days, working in project groups and home assignments. Contact days are approximately twice a month at Thursday and Friday.
The total length for degree studies is two years. Prerequisites for graduation from programme are studies according to approved study plan. The degree’s minimum ECTS is 60 containing obligatory and elective studies.
Development
The content of the degree program has been designed in collaboration with key renovation companies and engineering engineering firms. Changes in the qualification requirements for structural designers at the Ministry of the Environment increase the need for YAMK graduates. The thesis is done under the supervision of a university of applied sciences teacher and a student's workplace supervisor.
