Descriptions

The Master´s Degree in Conservation comprises 60 credits. The Final Thesis being a research and development project compiles half of the degree. The time required to take the Master´s degree is 1,5 years.

The studies are based on multiform learning including contact and distance learning and various data collection and analysis tasks including development projects in co-operation with working life. The contact learning will take two days per month during normal working hours. The development and learning assignments are connected with working life R&D challenges. The studies emphasize multi-professional and international networking.

In the Degree Program of Conservation the professional development emphasizes working life competences. When starting studies the students have at least two years work experience in the field of conservation.
The research and development project realized as a Master´s Thesis will respond to challenges of current working life. The ability and skills of a student for research and development will evolve by deepening into R&D methods and approaches and accomplishing the Master´s Thesis. In the Master´s Thesis the student will yield new knowledge and data and develop working life and conservation field in an innovate way. A compulsory seminar working is an essential part of the Master´s Thesis.

The Master´s Degree in Conservation fulfills the qualification requirements for public service being equivalent to university master´s degrees. The qualification title is Master of Culture and Arts (in Finnish ylempi AMK).

The focal areas of Master´s Degree studies in Conservation are:

Current research and development in museology from the point of view of conservation

Objective

The aim of the Master´s Degree in Conservation is to develop and deepen the student´s theoretical knowledge and skills and offer qualification to serve as an expert, leader and initiator of development in conservation. The students will be able to use and apply these qualification and skills in their own work as experts and developers in the field of cultural heritage.

The student understands the significance of conservation both in the national and international context of cultural heritage. The student will gain good skills to follow and analyze the debate and development in conservation and cultural heritage. The student will be able to use the results of the current research and development in these fields for development of her/his own professional expertise and work.
