Descriptions

Master of Engineering degree programme in Procurement is a degree for those who want to enhance their competence as procurement and sourcing professionals by deepening their strategic management, analytics and leadership skills. The degree programme prepares participants to drive value through the supply chain and transform procurement into a strategic function. Students will learn to leverage technology for effective supply management and procurement analytics, emphasise sustainability and collaboration, and advocate for the importance of procurement and sourcing within the organisation.

The studies enable the student to gain the needed theoretical and applied knowledge, skills, and competencies to manage and develop company's external resources, supplier relationships, procurement process and procurement organisation as well as the digitalisation and automation of the procurement function. In addition to procurement specific competencies the student will enhance leadership and overall business competencies.

The degree programme consists of the following elements:

• Professional Procurement Studies, 20 ECTS module (4 courses)
• Research Methods and Skills, 5 ECTS
• Elective Studies 5 ECTS (1 course)
• Master's Thesis 30 ECTS.

Advanced professional studies in procurement include courses such as Procurement Operations and Strategy, Collaboration and Negotiation Skills, Supplier Relationship Management and Procurement Analytics and Technology. Methodological studies provide students with the basis for carrying out applied research projects. Additionally the student can choose one elective master level course e.g. among other professional procurement studies or advanced business studies.

As a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS) each student plans and implements a research & development project conducted in a real business context, typically at own place of work. When working on this project, the student applies their research, business development, and project management skills, as well as leadership, team and networking skills. Thus master’s thesis will combine innovative development work with academic research.

The studies and study guidance are designed and organised in a way to enable students to finish their degree within 1–1.5 academic years as part-time studies. The programme is organised fully online. It has been designed to meet the needs of students who prefer distance learning or want to achieve a master's degree while working. Students who are liable for tuition fees will only incur costs for one year if they graduate within that time. If they need to extend their studies, additional fees will apply. The degree programme enables an international online learning environment and network of professionals for those who want to study flexibly alongside work in and outside Finland.

Development

Master´s degree in Procurement (Master of Business Administration) started in the autumn 2020 as the first fully online implemented Master degree programme at Metropolia Business School. It was preceded by a Finnish master´s degree programme in procurement at Metropolia Business School 2009–2021. The English master degree programme in procurement was replaced by a multidisciplinary degree programme in 2025 so that business and technology students study together, partly sharing the same curriculum. They will graduate either as masters of business administration or masters of engineering.

The curriculum 2020 was developed together with the members of The Finnish Association of Purchasing and Logistics (www.logy.fi) in various workshops with procurement professionals. The curriculum was revised in 2024 based on student feedback and the evaluation of the procurement lecturers´ team consisting of procurement and supply chain management professionals recruited to Metropolia Business School during 2021–2023. The curriculum 2025 was validated by the procurement professional members of Metropolia Business School Advisory Board.

This curriculum T2525S6 has been created based on L1125S6 curriculum due to the programme being a multidisciplinary master degree programme where master of business administration and master of engineering students study together and the curriculum is therefore partly the same (90 ECTS for the master of business administration and 60 ECTS for the master of engineering). Study places for master of engineering students were added in autumn 2025.
