Descriptions

The UAS degree in elderly care in human ageing and services (Master's Degree) is intended for the professionals and university graduates in social services and health care, who want to deepen their gerontological competence and extend their expertise in the developing and managing elderly care in a multiprofessional group. From the students, two years of work experience are required in a field and a corresponding UAS degree. The degree title is determined according to each student’s prior degree, affixed with the abbreviation YAMK. Students at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences may be conferred one of the following degree titles from the Degree Programme in Human Ageing and Services: Orthotist-Prosthetist; Paramedic; Physiotherapist; Elderly Care Professional; Podiatrist; Optometrist; Osteopath; Registered Nurse; Master of Social Services; Oral Hygienist; Public Health Nurse; or Occupational Therapist.


Learning Outcomes of Education

The aim of the UAS degree in the elderly care work (Master's Degree) is to strengthen the gerontological and cooperative competence and expertise based on multi-disciplinary proficiency, as well as management and development expertise. The studies strengthen the student's competence in the empowering and participatory elderly care work; diverse and multiform ageing-based customer understanding; as well as managing and developing diverse work communities, services and customers. In their work communities, the students develop services that strengthen the quality of life of older people in different living and operating environments that meet future needs and changes in the service structure. Through their development activity, the students strengthen both their own gerontological skills and those of the work communities.



Upon Graduation, the Students Can:

• apply gerontological knowledge and the ethical principles of elderly care work in their activity as well as client understanding based on diversity in ageing
• assess the functioning of services for the elderly and their future development needs for older people from the point of view of improved quality of life and occupational performance
• utilise multi-disciplinary expertise and strengthen client orientation in
planning, implementing and developing various residential and
operating environments
• strengthen both staff and client satisfaction when leading diverse work communities;
services and customerships
• advance an innovative culture for the elderly care
• lead and develop socially sustainable service production and customerships
• produce and apply research and development data from the point of view of advocating well-being and health of older people



Course Contents and Implementation
The degree consists of the following studies:

• Gerontological Competence and Development 25 ECTS
• Managing and Developing Services for the Elderly 30 ECTS
• Master’s Thesis 30 ECTS
• Elective studies 5 ECTS

Education takes place in close cooperation with working life. The studies are carried out as multiform education, where the contact days take up 2-4 days per month. Contact teaching is organized both as online distance learning and as classroom contact days. It is possible for the students to complete studies at Metropolia's project work as well as in development work in work life and to participate in international cooperation during their studies as a part of their own studies. It is possible to complete the studies alongside work.

The study period lasts approximately for 1.5 years.


Career Possibilities

Graduates from the Master`s Degree in Human Ageing and Services are capable of functioning in demanding positions in development and management of care and services of older people, which require the ability to anticipate, assess and improve gerontological knowledge within the field of care of older people and renew practices innovatively and internationally.
