Objective

The student is able to communicate about medical, occupational exposure and exposure concerning the population in basic level. The student is able to communicate about the quality and the quantity of the exposure in daily work and he/she is able to interpret the radiation risks in these areas.

The student understands the general principles in radiation safety and is able to apply them in practice.
The student is able to use practices in optimizing protection of the the employees.

Content

Basics of radiation physics and radiation biology and their significance in the use of medical radiation.
The essential legislation on the use of medical radiation.
The essential technical and physical principles and proper practices in situations where medical radiation is used.

It is a study course to be completed independently.

Study material and recommended literature can be found in the Moodle learning environment of the course.

Teaching methods

Radiation safety online course for nurses, 1 credit. One ECTS credit corresponds to 27 hours of study time.

All the course work takes place on this Moodle learning platform. The course includes six modules:
• Ionizing radiation
• Radiation and health
• Radiation safety at work
• The use of radiation in medicine
• Radiation safety in X-ray examinations and procedures
• Regulations governing the use of radiation

The sections consist of instructional series.
The course includes a final exam that is assessed on the scale: pass / fail.
Studying is completely independent.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Evaluation is on scale accepted/fail. To achieve accepted evaluation student must gain study modules learning outcomes.
Knowledge is demonstrated by exam. Failed exam can be retaken twice.

Arviointi on tyyppiä hyväksytty/hylätty. Hyväksytyssä suorituksessa opiskelija saavuttaa opintojakson tavoitteissa mainitun osaamisen.
Osaaminen osoitetaan tentillä. Hylätyn tentin voi uusia kaksi kertaa.

Assessment methods and criteria

pass/fail

The final exam covers the main areas of the course (sections 1-6). The duration of the final exam is 60 minutes. The minimum passing score is 60% of the points. If the result falls below that, the exam must be repeated.

The final exam opens when the student has successfully completed the intermediate task of sections 1-5 (80% correct) and the knowledge quiz of section 6 (60% correct).
