Materials

Videos and other materials as well as tasks in the Moodle workspace. Link will be submitted to participants before start of the course on 2 May 2025.

Teaching methods

A self-paced online course. The course includes an introduction to the English phonetic system and classical singing diction through videos and other materials, as well as practising sounds separately and in the context of song texts. The course is completed by submitting written phonetic transcription tasks related to English Art Song using IPA symbols, as well as an oral task, to the Moodle workspace. The language of instruction is Finnish.

Further information

The course consists of six sessions, during which the English phonetic system is reviewed, particularly from the perspective of classical singing diction, and pronunciation is practised. The course material includes videos presenting various aspects of pronunciation, as well as exploring auditory examples from vocal literature in both British and American English, and written and oral tasks related to song texts.

Assessment methods and criteria

In the written transcription tasks using IPA symbols, the student's ability to perceive phonetic phenomena from the perspective of the English language and their mastery of the IPA symbol system are assessed. The student must be able to distinguish different vowel qualities and accurately notate consonant sounds. In the oral tasks, the student's ability to produce English sounds is particularly evaluated.
