Objective

The student understands
• what freightforwarding and its connections with global business are
• the role of freightforwarding in managing business and material currents
• the variety of professional expertise areas in the field
• the most important concepts, delivery conditions, delivery clauses and practices in the field
• what are the requirements and prerequisites for global transportation of goods and materials
• how freightforwarding and logistics are an elementary part of economic life, industry and B2B business between companies

The course is built out of following subthemes
• global trade and its challenges
• sustainability and environmental responsibility
• what is freightforwarding?
• the big picture of operations and sectors in the field
• the context in logistics, risk management, responsibilities of partners, contracts and pacts
• PSYM - the Nordic Convention of Standard Terms
• Incoterms - the international delivery clauses
• foreign trade to EU and non-EU countries
• foreign import and customs clearance procedures

Freightforwarding and Logistics in the 2020s (5 ECTS) is a web-based study course to be conducted independently in Metropolia’s Moodle Learning Platform (course management system).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has achieved the minimum objectives of the study course. The student recognizes central concepts of the subject area of the course and understands the reference framework in which freightforwarding belongs in world trade. The student understands the prerequisites for the development of expertise in the freightforwarding industry.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course, even if there is still room for improvement in some areas. The student has a good command of the central concepts of the subject area of the study course, understands knows how to apply the information in expert work and recognizes the terms of delivery, risks and procedures in the field. The student knows how to search for information from up-to-date sources and understands the importance of expertise in working in the field from the perspective of both the transport customer and the freightforwarding company.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the goals of the course with credit. The student has assimilated the concepts of the course, the contents of contract terms, delivery clauses, insurance and customs procedures, understands the role of the field in international trade and in the business context. The student knows how to use up-to-date information sources and is well equipped to apply what he has learned in the basic operations of freightforwarding. The student has internalized the areas of expertise related to freight forwarding and logistics and is able to develop further in them.

Qualifications

The are no mandatory preceding courses, but an elective Moodle course Logistiikan ja toimitusketjun perusteet 5 ECTS (Basics of Logistics and Supply Chain Management) is recommended. It gives a perfect starting point ja elementary knowledge to adopt the content of this course of freightforwarding.
