Basic Life Support, Clinical Practice (10 cr)

Objective

The student:
- understands the prehospital patient care process
- understands occupational and patient safety in the prehospital environment
- develops his understanding of the use of the prehospital mission and transport codes
- develops his skills in the use of the government terrestrial trunk radio and communication standards
- develops his skills in the use of the prehospital electronic charting system and reporting
- is able to use all relevant BLS medical equipment related to assessment, emergency care and immobilization
- is able to demonstrate the basics of 12lead ECG interpretation
- is able to demonstrate primary assessment and develops his skills in secondary assessment
- is able to demonstrate the prehospital care of typical BLS patients
- develops his skills in patient guidance and in the proper use of non-transports
- is aware of all the equipment of the ambulance and is able to demonstrate all relevant checks and maintenance works related to them
- understands the roles of the two medics during the EMS mission, when driving to the scene
- understands the importance of safe emergency vehicle placement on the scene
- is able to demonstrate safe patient moving techniques in the prehospital environment

- BLS clinical practice 7,5 credits
- 2,5 credits of lab sessions and/or simulation studies

Location and time

Clinical practice placed between the weeks 37-41, or at another agreed time. Before starting the clinical practice, theory of BSL and labrorations and simulations (excluding exam) must have been completed.

The calculation exam (from the course Perustason ensihoidon opintojakso) must be successfully completed before starting the clinical practice.

Teaching methods

Clinical practice (7,5 ECTS) in pre-hospital (BLS) emergency care environment, in EMS unit. Simulation exercises prior and after the clinical practice on campus (2,5 ECTS)

International connections

Harjoittelun voi suorittaa KV-vaihdossa Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun ohjeiden mukaisesti. Opiskelija huolehtii vaihtoon liittyvistä asioita hyvissä ajoin kv-koordinaattorin (Katariina Alava) ja kv-yhdyshenkilön (Jukka Kettunen) kanssa.

Completion alternatives

Harjoittelun voi AHOT:oida Metroplia Ammattikorkeakoulun ohjeiden mukaisesti perustason ensihoitajan työkokemuksella, joka on suoritettu ensihoidon yksikössä. Simulaatioita ei voi AHOT:oida. Jos opiskelija AHOT:oi harjoittelun, hän tekee omalle uraohjaajalleen AHOT-hakemuksen, jonka liitteeksi tulee työtodistus (ei työsopimus) ensihoitajan työstä ensihoidon yksikössä, todistus tehdyistä tunneista (200 tuntia töitä) ja itsearviointi omasta ensihoidon osaamisesta, joka pohjautuu opintojakson tavoitteisiin. AHOT-päätös tulee näyttää opintojakson vastuuopettajalle ennen opintojakson alkua.

Harjoittelun voi myös opinnollistaa ensihoitajan työllä (palkallinen harjoittelu). Tällöin opiskelija tekee harjoittelun palkallisena ensihoidon ympäristössä. Palkallisena tehty harjoittelu noudattaa normaalin harjoittelun periaatteita (arvioinnit, opettajan ohjaus, kaavakkeet, mahdolliset tehtävät jne.).

Student workload

Harjoittelun pituus on viisi viikkoa eli 200 tuntia. Harjoittelun ajalle osuvat pyhäpäivät eivät vähennä harjoittelun tuntimäärää. Harjoittelun tunteja ei voi myöskään korvata kirjallisella tehtävällä, vaan opiskelijan tulee suorittaa koko harjoittelu kliinisessä ympäristössä. Toteutukseen kuuluvat simulaatiot järjestetään koululla. Mikäli opiskelijalle tulee harjoittelun aikana sairauspoissaoloja, sovitaan niiden korvaamisesta yksilöllisesti harjoittelua ohjaavien opettajien kanssa.

Assessment methods and criteria

Simulaatiot edellyttävät aktiivista ja pakollista osallistumista. Harjoittelu arvioidaan kokonaisuutena hyväksytty/hylätty. Opiskelija perehtyy Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulun harjoittelua koskeviin ohjeistuksiin ennen harjoitteluun lähtemistä. Opiskelijalla tulee olla hyväksytty suoritus Perustason ensihoito opintojakson lääkelaskukokeesta ennen harjoitteluun lähtemistä. Harjoittelu voidaan evätä, mikäli lääkelaskukoe on suorittamatta.

Qualifications

A minimum of 50 credits of clinical nursing studies.
BLS competence.
