Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to read many kinds of texts related to everyday life (such as news or announcements), and he/she will also be able to acquire new information from the text, if the topic is familiar. He/she will understand clear speech and conversation on familiar topics. The student will be able to tell also some details about familiar things and is able to take part in ordinary unofficial conversations. The student will be able to write understandable and coherent texts about familiar everyday life topics (such as emails, announcements, customer feedback). The student’s communication skills will correspond mainly to the skills level B1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

This course provides targeted support for the linguistic proficiency required for the intermediate level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI):
- focus on YKI themes: social interaction, home and living, work and education, environment and society
- practice in oral and written communication in different situations related to the YKI themes and getting familiar with differences between unofficial and official language form: reading and listening different genres such us notices, announcements and articles; practicing service situations in offices and public services; writing unofficial and official message, announcement and feedback.
- strengthening basic grammatical structures and vocabulary

Further information

Prerequisites: The student's language level is A2.2-B1 (CERF), i.e. the student has completed, for example, Finnish 4 course before taking the course.

This Finnish as a second language course is open to all Metropolia degree students and also students in Metropolia Open University of Applied Sciences. Priority is given to students who pay tuition fees.

Good studying skills and a lot of independent work is required. Book time for homework and independent studying on your calendar about 5 h/week.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to
- communicate in ordinary social encounters
- understand the main points of ordinary and familiar texts
- describe familiar events and write an understandable message
- complete exercises on the A2-B1 level.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
- communicate in basic social encounters and take part in ordinary unofficial conversations
- understand everyday life texts and also acquire new information from a clear text, if the topic is familiar
- understand clear speech and conversation on familiar topics
- write messages in ordinary everyday situations and understandable, coherent texts about familiar topics
- complete exercises mainly on the level B1.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- apply the learnt matters in common situations and social encounters
- understand many kinds of everyday life texts and also acquire new information from a text, if the topic is familiar
- understand well clear speech and conversation on familiar topics
- write unofficial and official messages in different everyday life situations and coherent texts about familiar topics.
- complete exercises on the B1 level.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to
- communicate in ordinary social encounters
- understand the main points of ordinary and familiar texts
- describe familiar events and write an understandable message
- complete exercises on the A2-B1 level.

Assessment methods and criteria

Continuous assessment and exam. Attendance rate 80%.

Qualifications

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A2.2/B1.1 level, e.g. the courses Finnish 1-4 or corresponding studies.
