Objective

On completion of the course, the student knows how is the YKI basic level test and also how to get prepared for it. The student will be able to understand the key points and some details of simple texts (short messages, notifications, ads and very short news). He/she will understand clearly spoken standard language about familiar topics and will manage simple social encounters in Finnish. The student is able to describe his/her everyday life with some sentences both orally and in writing. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

The course provides targeted support for the linguistic proficiency required for the basic level of the National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI):
- focus on YKI themes: Home and living, traveling, health and wellbeing, working life
- practice in oral and written communication in different situations related to the YKI themes: reading and listening short messages and notifications, short news, announcements; practice in simple service situations such as buying tickets, asking and giving directions, making an appointment to the doctor; writing short texts (a message, note, simple description).

It´s important to participate actively in the lessons of Kohti YKIä 2 course and practice independently (Homework and other activities). You can´t study two courses at the same time.

Online lectures 16 h and face-to-face teaching 4 h. Independent studying in Moodle. YKI practice test on Myllypuro or Myyrmäki campus.

This Finnish as a second language course is targeted to all Metropolia degree students who have paid tuition fees.

Studying in this course requires a lot of independent work. Book time for independent studying on your calendar at least 5 h/week.

Finnish 1 and Finnish 2 courses must be completed before the start of the course.

- complete some exercises on the A2 YKI basic level

- communicate in basic social encounters and service situations
- understand the key points of short texts
- tell basic information about himself/herself and write understandable short texts for everyday need
- complete some exercises mainly on the A2 YKI basic level

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- apply the expressions, grammatical structures and vocabulary he/she has learnt in simple situations and social encounters
- acquire additional vocabulary he/she needs, and use it in everyday situations
- understand short texts about everyday life and also some details of them
- show interest in basic features of the Finnish language, culture and customs
- complete YKI basic level exercises consistently on the A2 proficiency level

- complete some exercises on the A2 YKI basic level

Assessment methods and criteria

Continous assessment (participation in classes and assignments in Moodle) and exam.

This course prepares the student for the basic level YKI test (In Finnish) > Registration time on Mars 2025: 10 th - 30 th of Mars

Qualifications

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A1.3/A2.1 level, e.g. the course Finnish 1 (A1.2) and Finnish 2 (A1.3-A2.1).
