Objective

- On completion of the course the students are able to explain the operating principles of the heating, water and sewage, ventilation and air conditioning, and automation systems in buildings.
- Students can list the main components of the building services systems and explain the operating principles of those components.
- Students are able to describe the connecting points between the building services systems and other systems and parts of buildings.
- Students are able to summarize the importance of the solutions in building services systems which effect on energy efficiency and the indoor environment.
- Students are able to draft the documents for designing, operating and maintaining the building services systems in residential building as instructed.

Content

1. Heating: Calculation of power and energy consumption. Operating principles, selecting and designing of heat distribution components and systems, dimensioning, balancing and control of heat distribution and emission systems.

2. Water and waste water: Operation principles and designing the domestic water and waste water systems, rain water and drainage systems, designing production of hot water.

3. Ventilation: Demand and main components of ventilation. Operational principles, comparing and selecting the systems. Planning and balancing duct systems. Basic processes of air conditioning. Factors affecting the cooling load and calculating a basic case. Essential principles of air distribution. Air distribution device and selecting them. Energy economy, sound engineering, fire safety and cleanliness.

4. Building automation: HVAC processes in building automation, regulation, control and alarm actions, optimization and monitoring consumptions.

5. Technical documentation of the building service systems using CAD and BIM tools: System junctions and cooperation with different parties.

We will meet according to the schedule.

Materials

The material of each part is published/announced in the moodle workspace.

Teaching methods

We mainly use work forms: face-to-face teaching, lectures, class assignments, self-study assignments, learning by doing, group work and practice assignments.

Exam schedules

The exams of the each part are organized during the implementation period of the study course. For renewals, we comply with article 34 of the degree regulations.

Completion alternatives

Deviations from the implementation plan must be agreed with the teacher of the each part.

Student workload

We use the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), where one credit corresponds to approximately 25-30 hours of work. If the topics are familiar, the actual time may be shorter. The time spent by the participant and the load caused by the work are discussed in the implementation plan of each part.

The course consists of several implementation parts. Each part has its own teacher and its own implementation plan.

The implementation plan describes the work forms of the course, performance requirements, performance organization, schedule, attendance requirements, feedback forms and evaluation criteria. The above-mentioned information will be discussed in more detail with the students at the beginning of the implementation of the course.

In addition to above, the students can select the main components of the systems. They can design the interfaces with other parts and systems and compare different solutions in regards to energy efficiency and indoor environment. The students can individually create the documents needed for the design, use and maintenance of building services systems.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to above, the students can optimize the performance of building services systems in regards to cost, energy efficiency and indoor environment

Assessment methods and criteria

The grade of the course is based on the learning objectives of the course and the performance of the participant. The issue is described in more detail in the implementation plan of the each part. The grade of the entire course is calculated when all the parts have been successfully completed.
