Objective

After completing the course, students will be able to communicate in familiar everyday and working situations and will have sufficient language skills to deal with a wide range of practical issues. They can understand the main ideas of everyday texts and can also deduce details from the context. The student can write short descriptions and messages and very simple job search texts. They have a command of basic everyday vocabulary and language structures, some idiomatic expressions and the most common linking words and expressions. The student's language skills are at levels A2.1-A2.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Content

• Oral and written communication in everyday situations: education and work, parties and customs; shopping situations, knowledge of Finnish culture and society
• Language structures: use of tenses and passive voice, expressing conditionality and fictionality, plural forms of nominals, comparative forms
• Differences between formal and informal language use

The student is able to
• cope with simple communication situations in everyday life and at work
• understand the main points and some details in ordinary texts
• write short texts and messages related to everyday life, and a very simple CV
• identify some features of formal and informal style.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
• deal with routine tasks and participate in communication of everyday life and at work
• understand the main points and several details in texts of everyday life
• compose understandable texts, messages and descriptions about familiar topics and write a very simple CV and job application
• use the language in formal and informal style following given instructions
• apply their language skills in freetime, study and work related situations following given instructions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
• participate in the communication of different kinds of groups and in working life with some support of the communication partner
• understand many types of texts concerning the everyday life even when the topic is not related to their immediate environment
• compose understandable texts, messages, and descriptions related to everyday life, and a simple CV and job application
• use the language in formal and informal style to some extent
• apply their language skills in freetime, study and work related situations.
