Objective

On completion of the course, the student is expected to at least be able to explain the material properties of concrete, assess the impact of
different factors on the time dependent properties of concrete, compare reinforcement in different structures, define the exposure class of a structure and to understand the purpose of minimum reinforcement.
Furthermore the student can explain the basics of bending and shear force measurement and related quantities and terms.

Content

1. The development of concrete structures
2. Properties of concrete and reinforcement steel
3. Time dependent properties and their impact on the structures
4. The impact of manufacturing method on creep and shrinkage
5. Interaction of concrete and reinforcement
6. Reinforcement
7. Reinforcement of beams
8. Concrete stress classes and durability design
9. Principles of dimensioning of bending and shear reinforcement of a beam subjected to bending
10. Principles of T-beam operation
11. Reinforcement and formwork drawings
12. Duties of site supervision and the division of responsibilities between the structural designer and site supervision when using reinforced concrete

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
- can describe the material properties of concrete and its typical uses
- can describe the time dependent properties of concrete structures and estimate how different factors influence them
- can compare ways of implementing reinforcement in different structures
- can determine the exposure class of a structure and understand how the thickness of the concrete cover affects the structure
- can explain the concepts anchoring length and lap length
- understands the reasons for using minimum reinforcement in different situations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student
- can calculate the bending and shear reinforcement of a beam in simple cases
- can understand the concepts of under reinforced, normally reinforced and over-reinforced cross section
- can determine the bar list/bending schedule as well as read formwork and reinforcement drawings without problems
- can produce a simple reinforcement drawing of a beam.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student
- can determine and calculate the main reinforcement and shear reinforcement of a bent reinforced concrete beam in the simple case
- plan the anchoring of the structure's main reinforcement
- can evaluate creep and shrinkage in simple cases
- understand the basics of concrete beam fire rating
- understand the operating principle of the T-section

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student
- can describe the material properties of concrete and its typical uses
