Objective

On completion of the course the student will be able to discuss the use of wood as a building material
List the significant material properties and their magnitude
Compare the material properties of wood with those of other building materials
Estimate the effect of moisture content of wood on strength
Estimate the effect of load duration to the behavior of the structure
Define the load combinations of an ordinary timber beam
Perform the ULS design of a beam to comply with EN 1995-1-1
Consider the influence of lateral buckling to the moment capacity of a beam under bending moment
define the capacity of simultaneously compressed and bent structural member considering also the possibility of buckling
derive the deformations considering the influence of creep
calculate the capacity of nailed joint
calculate the deformation of a nailed joint

calculate the forces and moments of a simple structure
define the load combinations of a simple timber beam
define the design values of timber material properties
calculate the bending capacity and shear capacity of a timber beam

The student is able to
Additionally to the previous criteria:
define the deflection of a timber beam considering the influence on creep
calculate the capacity of a timber column with bending about one axis
calculate the load bearing resistance of a nailed joint

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
Additionally to the previous criteria:
calculate the capacity of a timber column with bending about two axis
calculate the load bearing resistance and strain of a nailed joint
perform the design of a nailed joint to comply with the requirements of EN 1995-1-1
