The Basic Practice of Clinical Nursing 1 (bilingual) (5 cr)

Objective

Students
- are aware of the key competence areas of nursing
- can implement several methods in assisting and supporting client/patient’s daily activities considering patient safety
- detect changes in client/patient’s basic vital signs and are capable of supporting these vital signs with assistive methods
- understand the significance of ethicality and professional interaction to nursing and consider patient’s needs for psychosocial support
- can adopt an individually-oriented approach to encountering clients/patients from different cultures
- understand the importance of quality in nursing to improve patient care and their own development

- laws and decrees on quality management and quality assessment in nursing
- post-mortem nursing care

Theory exam retake can be tried twice on pre-scheduled times, in case of failure in both the course has to be repeated. Elevating grade can be tried once in next possible retake. Instructions how to enroll for retake are found in orientation.

International connections

Student can complete the course or parts of it with a Finnish-speaking group if they have sufficient language skills to do so.

Completion alternatives

It is possible to apply total or partly AHOT/RPL (recognition of prior learning) based on earlier studies, according to AHOT-guidelines (please see OMA). The AHOT process must be commenced before the course begins. The student going through the process must enroll on the course as usual and attend on orientation so the compensatory activities can be agreed. Decision of partial AHOT must be presented to the responsible teacher prior to course orientation.

- 1 ects = 27
- 5 ects = 135t of students work

- Total number of hours on course is 135 h, which includes both contact teaching and independent study

Further information

Participation in orientation is compulsory.

Theory lectures include learning activities, that are compulsory and require attendance. In case of absence student is required to ask teacher for instructions on how to compensate.

Participation in clinical laborations is compulsory.

Students are required to wear appropriate protective uniforms in clinical laborations. Instructions given in asepsis lectures are being followed during practicing.
