Objective

The student
• understands data management requirements of the printing process
• understands printing process phases preceding printing
• understands more deeply the fundamentals of the digital printing
• has an overview of software used in media as well as in packaging industry
• perceives the overall influence of different requirements to printing production

Content

The course is built out of seven subthemes and practical training using equipment and machines in Stadin AO

• Digital original
• Production of printed image
• Digital asset management and preflight, issues with digital data/material
• Color management and measurement
• Work flow and automation
• Digital printing and finishing
• The importance of customer acceptance and how to execute it
• Practical training

Students have achieved the course objectives fairly. Students will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s central concepts, models and is able to utilize the most common tools. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students have achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement in some areas. Students know the course concepts and models well and are able to justify their decisions. The students are capable in applying their knowledge in new situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field and is able to analyse his/her own expertise and areas requiring further development.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students have achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. Students master commendably the course subject area’s concepts, models and tools. Students are capable in making justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The students are well prepared to apply their knowledge in new situations. Students manage well the main principles of the production preceding printing. Student has assimilated the importance of different phases of the printing process and is able to continue development of technical skills in a chosen way.

Qualifications

The are no mandatory preceding courses, but the strongly recommended study course is Printing methods, materials and visuality 5 ECTS or comparable knowledge.

Further information

Digital printing and prepress 5 ECTS is a web-based study course to be conducted independently in Metropolia’s Moodle Learning Platform (course management system).
