Objective
The student has mastered general terminology and concepts of music and is able to use music notation. The student recognizes and is able to use melodies and harmonies based on major-minor tonality. The student has become acquainted with the melodic and rhythmic features of music as well as interpretive practices and is able to apply them in their own musical activities. The student develops their knowledge and skills in the most common keys, rhythms and tempos. The student is able to work independently.
Content
The content of the course is divided into music theory, aural skills and rhythm studies.
Theory:
- general professional terminology
- triads and four-note chords in major and minor keys
- chord degrees and their notation and cadences in major and minor keys
- scales (including church modes)
Aural Skills:
- diatonic melodies in the most common keys
- treble and bass clefs
- chord progressions of triads and four-note chords
Rhythm:
- simple and compound meters and the most common complex meters
- rhythmic figures and syncopation
- interpretation of rhythm in preparation and prima vista
- even and triplet based-subdivision of the beat (even and jazz/shuffle articulation)

The student demonstrates a basic knowledge of notation, the concept of music, and general terminology. The student recognizes and is able to use melodies and harmonies based on major-minor tonality. The student is familiar with the melodic as well as rhythmic features and interpretive practices of music. The student has learned to apply their knowledge and skills in the most common keys, rhythms and tempos. The student is able to work independently.

Further information
This is a compulsory course in all majors. By completing this course, the student will be prepared to continue to the Music Fundamentals of Music for Professional Musicians 2 course.
