Objective

After completion of the course, the student
• understands the essential concepts related to the structure of elements and compounds
• is able to conduct basic calculations concerning the amount of substance, irreversible reactions, the contents of solutions and the pH of strong acids and bases
• is familiar with the behaviour of element groups on a general level and with the most important organic compounds and their naming.

Content

• Atomic structure, periodic table
• Chemical bonding
• Amount of substance, stoichiometry of compounds
• States of matter, simple calculations based on the ideal gas law
• Heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures, calculation of contents
• Chemical reaction equation, stoichiometry of reactions
• Concepts of acids and bases, the pH of strong acids and bases
• Chemistry of element groups
• Introduction to organic chemistry: types of compounds, functional groups, basics of naming

Exam schedules

If not succeed in the two attempts , there is a possibility to take a retest of Exam 1 & 2 together in 7.11.2024 , Time 10-12 at MMA219)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
• knows the basic concepts of chemistry
• is able to conduct basic calculations
• has reached the goals of core competence.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• is familiar with the concepts and principles of chemistry
• is able to explain and interpret chemical formulae and equations related to chemical phenomena.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• can use basic concepts and knowledge logically
• is able to solve applied exercises of chemistry related to their study field.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is based on exams and performance of assignments.

Evaluation of assignments: Based on completion of assignments, Grade scale is given below
50-59 %, 1 point
60-69 %, 2 points
70-79 %, 3 points
80-89%, 4 points

The maximum points earned from the exam is 30 points. the minimum points required for passing the exam is 14 points. The grade scale for the exam is given below,

14 points : grade 1
15 points : grade 1+
16 points : grade 1.5
17 points: grade 2-
...
29 points : grade 5-
30 points : grade 5

The final grade is based on the average of the partial exam grades.
Additional 1 point will be received to all the students in second exam, when more than 80 % of students gives the course feedback.
