Concept of a Drama Series (15 cr)

Objective

The students are familiar with both the content and production related characteristics of continuous fictive and non-fictive multi-episode series. The students apply their storytelling skills in development of a series concept. The students know the guidelines of cooperation between commissioner, producer, script writer and director in a professional series productions. The students apply their fiction production knowledge in the series concept planning. They understand the significance of teamwork and can work as a member of a team. The students know how to develop, modify and pitch a series concept. They understand the significance of the target group and deepen their understanding of the distribution platforms of programs. The students can break down the script of a continuous multi-episode series from both artistic and production related point of view. The students are familiar with key characteristics of both domestic and international co-productions. They know the budgeting, financing and key contracts of series productions in both domestic and international contexts.

- The characteristics of continuous multi-episode series (both fictive and non-fictive).
- Planning and scheduling of developmen process.
- Phases of idea production and scriptwriting.
- Teamwork skills, giving and receiving of feedback.
- Production models and project management.
- Distribution platforms and target groups of a series.
- Models and key contracts in international co-productions.
- Professional presentation package of a series concept.
- Pitching.
- Developing and deepening of personal professional orientation.
- The emphasis of the course varies from year to year (concept of a fictional or reality series).

Location and time

Kurssi toteutetaan Arabian kampuksella, vierailukohteissa Helsingissä sekä itsenäisen työskentelyn osalta omavalintaisessa kohteissa. Tunne -luokka on vaeattuna myös ryhmätyöskentelypäiville. Kurssin ajankohta on 21.10.- 13.12.2024

Materials

Kurssin aikana kannustetaan katsomaan omatoimisesti mahdollisimman paljon draamasarjoja laidasta laitaan.

Teaching methods

Kurssi sisältää luentoja, ryhmätyöskentelyä, katseluita, vierailuita sekä itsenäistä työskentelyä.

Further information

Kurssin alkuosuus koostuu pitkälti luennoista ja vierailuista sekä harjoitustehtävistä. Seuraava osuus koostuu ryhmätyöskentelystä, jossa opiskelijat muodostavat writersroomin ja kehittävät sarjakonseptista yhden tuotantokauden jaksosuunnitelman. Kolmannessa vaiheessa jokainen opiskelija kirjoittaa treatmentin yhdestä jaksosta. Toisen ja kolmannen vaiheen aikana tarjolla on klinikoita sekä tuotannollisesta että dramaturgillisesta näkökulmasta lehtoreiden kanssa..

Students have acceptable participation in class and complete the assignments to a satisfactory standard. They are acquainted with the content and production related features of fictional and non-fictional continuous plot series productions. They recognize features of the cooperation between commissioner, producer, scriptwriter and director in a professional series production. They participate in the planning and development of a series concept. They are acquainted with different target groups and distribution platforms for series productions. They are acquainted with the breakdown of a series script from an artistic and production point of view. They participate in teamwork.

Assessment criteria, good (3)
