Objective

The student understands how high quality fresh water is delivered to customers. The student knows how drainage works. The student understands the functioning of the waste water treatment system. The student understands the needs and basics of water management development.

Content

-Water supply from groundwater and surface water
-Quality of tap water
-Finnish legislation and EU directives relating to tap water
-Basics of wastewater drainage design
-Specific features of different waters

Location and time

The lecturing and laboratory time schedule is informed at the beggining of the study period.

Teaching methods

Lecturing, calculation and laboratory works and group work.

One ordinary exam at the end of the course and two resits.

F 2 F and partly distance lecturing.

Student workload

1 ECTS is on average 27 hours work.

Estimated work load:

- lecturing, calculation tasks and exam about 45 h
- material and academic reading : 25 h
- laboratory work and report writing: 10 h

- own learning and work time 25 h

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to apply, calculate, change and choose the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as to complete and produce the necessary information for the calculations.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The students is able to categorise, collect, combine and generalise the concepts related to the matter and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the basic quantitative calculations as well as derive and rearrange given basic information.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to define or describe the subject matter related to the concepts and phenomena qualitatively and calculate the associated basic quantitative comparisons and calculations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Labroratory work 10 %

Calculation tasks 20 %

Exam is giving 50 % of the total points and grade

In group work done and activities in class will give 20 % of the total points and grade.

Qualifications

The student understands the basics of environmental chemistry related to water treatment. The student recognises selected environmental engineering processes and equipment as part of the process.
