Objective

On completion of the course the student can
- recognise the difference between concrete structures, reinforced concrete structures and stressed concrete structures
- explain the material properties of reinforced concrete and reinforcement steel
- determine the needed concrete cover according to durability requirements and functional demands
- calculate the needed reinforcement based on bending moment for a beam cross section
- select the required main reinforcement for a beam based on calculations
- calculate the required shear reinforcement for a beam cross section
- choose the required shear reinforcement for a beam cross section
- calculate the shear capacity of a beam cross section with no shear reinforcement
- calculate the minimum reinforcement of a cross section
- calculate the required anchoring length of bars
- calculate required lap length of bars.

Content

1. Concrete as a construction material
2. Concrete frame types
3. Properties of concrete and reinforcement steel
4. Interaction of concrete and reinforcement
5. Structural functioning of a reinforced concrete beam
6. Design of a reinforced concrete beam under bending moment and determining required reinforcement
7. Designing reinforcement of a beam in compliance with SFS-EN 1992-1-1
Prerequisites

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

On completion of the course the student can
- explain typical applications of reinforced concrete and frame types
- calculate without problems bending moments and shear forces on a simply supported beam when subjected to simple loading
- define design strengths of reinforcement and concrete
- define the exposure class of a member
- calculate the required concrete cover in compliance with SFS-EN 1992-1-1
- define the effective depth of a member
- explain the different failure modes of a reinforced beam
- calculate the required reinforcement of a beam member in ULS
- prepare the reinforcement drawing of a beam.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to the previous criteria, the student can
- calculate the shear capacity of a beam cross section with no shear reinforcement
- calculate the shear capacity of a member having shear reinforcement and define adequate shear reinforcement.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to mastering the previous skills excellently, the student can
- calculate the anchorage length for main reinforcing bars
- calculate the lap length for main reinforcing bars
- define optimal reinforcement for each section of a beam according to the moment and shear force distribution.
