Objective
Learning outcomes
As a student you are able to explain the formation, movement, functioning and purpose of blood cells and their manifestation in different bodily fluids. You recognise blood cells based on their morphology. You are able to describe the operating principles of a haematology analyser. You are able to explain the parameters included in a blood count test and find out its clinical significance. You are able to describe the blood coagulation system and explain its link to key coagulation tests. You are able to justify the significance of pre-analytical factors to coagulation and blood count tests and analyse coagulation and blood count tests in compliance with quality control recommendations. You are also able to service haematology analysers and coagulation test equipment. You are able to assess the results you have obtained in relation to reference values and the patient’s status. You are familiar with the tasks of the biomedical laboratory scientist when collecting bone marrow samples and know the tests that can be performed on bone marrow samples. You work in various working and learning environments and in multidisciplinary teams. You are able to obtain English-language information required in laboratory work from various sources and to process it and communicate about it in writing and orally. You use English proficiently in the tasks of your own field and in developing your professional skills.

Possible practice in innovation centre and co-operation with companies.
Exam schedules
The dates of the exams are reviewed in the mandatory orientation class.
Written exams in haematology in Myllypuro campus.
Two re-examinations are informed in orientation.
Raising the grade is possible once at the appointed re-examinations (except for the English part of the course). It is not possible to raise English grade.
Physics of haematology methods: an assignment in Moodle. Dead line announced in orientation.
English: assessment is based on active participation in the classes, homework and a written exam and, therefore, it is not possible to raise the English grade. Re-takes will be announced later.

Further information
Students must confirm their attendance for a course implementation by being present when tuition begins. Students who are unable to attend the first teaching session due to illness may also confirm their attendance by informing the lecturer of this in advance.
Practical workshops are compulsory, absences must be compensated.
Revise the physics of haematological equipment.
Assignments must be returned on time, in order to be evaluated during the course. It is not possible to raise assignment evaluation.
To pass the whole course a student must pass all the assignments and the final exam.
It is not allowed to use or distribute any tasks, assignments or MATERIALS in any other way than in the student's own studies. Distributing ONLY with the teacher's personal permission.
The use of artificial intelligence is not allowed. Students are not allowed to use artificial intelligence to create the content of works without separate permission or approval.
Evaluation scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Satisfactory (1–2)
Clinical haematology: 0–5
Assessment framework, see the appendix.
Assessment criteria for beginner/advanced level are applied.
Assessment criteria for English language
Satisfactory (1–2)
In communication situations related to their professional field, the student trusts their communication skills enough to manage professional language use situations by asking questions to check any unclear points, and thanks to their own short speeches are able to understand the other speaker’s communication in order to act appropriately. The student expresses their thoughts in a simple way and for the most part coherently and reasonably understandably despite shortcomings in professional language and making grammatical errors that make it difficult for the message to get across. The student can produce simple texts of a specific format independently, and longer texts by means of language tools.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3–4)
Clinical haematology: 0–5

Assessment criteria for English language
Good (3–4)
In communication situations related to their professional field, the student trusts their communication skills enough to manage language situations in the field as expected from a professional. The student exchanges ideas on an equal basis with an independent language user, and if necessary, takes the initiative to communicate in professional language use situations, taking into account to some extent the other participants’ language and cultural backgrounds and the circumstances. The student expresses themselves without delay, clearly and in detail, using professional vocabulary accurately. The student pronounces English clearly so that the overall message is conveyed, and produces texts for different purposes, without any of the occasional weak points in the language stopping the message from getting across.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5)

Assessment criteria for English language
Excellent (5)
In communication situations related to their professional field, the student trusts their communication skills to take part and take the initiative in language use situations in the field, following the conventions of various communication situations. The student exchanges ideas clearly and fluently on an equal basis with a skilful language user, and communicates, taking the initiative if necessary, also in demanding professional language use situations, taking into account the other participants’ language and cultural backgrounds. The student expresses themselves efficiently and precisely, using demanding professional vocabulary accurately. The student pronounces English clearly with natural stress and rhythm so that the overall message is emphasised, and produces clear, well-structured and compelling texts in various text types.
Assessment methods and criteria
Final exam: includes hematology and blood cell morphology. Grading 0-5.
All the assignments must be returned in given deadlines in order to be evaluated.
Physics is evaluated accepted/failed.
English: assessment on scale 0 to 5 is based on the course assignments.
