Objective

The students are familiar with critical and post-structural theories concerned with globalization, urbanization, and the meaning of place and place-making in everyday urban life from early childhood to late adulthood. The students are able to identify social phenomena that occur in urban areas due to globalisation. The students develop their familiarity with the urban city further through field activities and assignments.

Content

Theoretical perspectives on processes of economic, political, and social globalisation. Place and place-making in urban areas. Introduction to ethnographic methods. Qualified empathy and practice ethnography. The role of the Bachelor of Social Services as narrator. Storytelling in sociocultural work in urban areas . Using storytelling to change systems. Simple Finnish vocabulary and phrases used in when discussing urban contexts and methods.
