Objective

Students
- can apply the theoretical knowledge and clinical competence required by the clinical practice environment in nursing of clients/patients
- are competent in the different nursing procedures and diagnostic examinations required by the clinical practice environment as part of the overall nursing care of clients/patients
- adopt a client-oriented approach to health promotion and preventive nursing care of clients/patients and their significant others
- follow the ethical guidelines and principles of nursing
- act as responsible members of multiprofessional workgroups and work community
- identify development needs of nursing
- are proficient in working life skills
- are able to evaluate their competence and develop it further

Content

Clinical Practice in nursing environment

Location and time

Clinical practice is done during the weeks 41-50
A student cannot commence the clinical practice before the week 41. The clinical practice can be done later, if the student will not graduate in December.

Materials

Vocational literature suitable for the clinical practice environment. Students must familiarize themselves with literature related to the clinical practice.

Teaching methods

The clinical practice is done in a mental health nursing, substance abuse nursing or crisis intervention environment selected by the student. Emergency care (except psychiatric) or ambulance is not a suitable environment for this clinical practice.

International connections

Clinical practice can be done as an international student exchange. Contact the international coordinator in advance and follow the relevant Metropolia instructions.

Completion alternatives

No optional methods. The student can have this clinical practice recognized by prior learning. In a case of RPL, a student will follow Metropolia RPL instructions and discuss with their tutor about the process. The clinical practice can be recognized only by a work experience as a substitute nurse in a suitable clinical environment. The work experience must be acquired in one continues period of at least 400 hours. The student must present a self assessment, a written proof of the employment and completed hours. The RPL application must be done at least 4 weeks before commencement of the clinical practice. It is possible to have part of the clinical practice recognized by prior learning before commencing the clinical practice.

Studification is possible.

Student workload

Clinical practice is 15 ECTS credits over a period of 10 weeks( 400 hours). During the training, the working methods, shifts and general principles of the work community are followed in connection with the training. All absences must be compensated.

Content scheduling

Practice is done at weeks 41-50. The practice must be completed before the graduation date.

Further information

The student must complete all the basic level clinical practices prior to the clinical practice. Medication calculation exam must be completed before the practice starts.

The student must have completed all the basic level clinical practices in curriculum prior the deepening clinical practice.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is based on the clinical practice learning objectives. In the evaluation the criteria for passed / failed clinical practice is used, please see Kliinisen hoitotyön harjoittelu Moodle workspace.

Prerequisites

Competence according to practice site requirements, knowledge of pharmacotherapy and drug calculation related to the practice environment. Clinical nursing practices 1-6 completed, unless otherwise agreed in the student's ISP.
