Objective

The student is familiar with the basic concepts of visual communication. The student is able to analyse the influence of visual communication in society. The student is able to analyse and define the special features of visual communication. The student knows the main theories related to the production and reception of the meanings of visual communication. The student is able to understand the social dimensions of their professional activities. The student perceives the field of visual communication design and their role as a designer through communication theories.

In addition to teacher-led meetings, the implementation has independent individual and small group tasks to be completed between meetings. Calendar reservations for independent work have also been marked for the implementation.

The course utilizes the Teams workspace. Space use only with Metropolia IDs. Those registered for the implementation will be added to the workspace.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student demonstrates partial knowledge of key concepts in visual communication. The student is able to acquire source material related to visual communication. The student is able to briefly consider the social role of visual communication. The student recognizes in part the special features related to visual communication in the formation of meanings and is able to analyze individual visual representations on a small scale, partly based on theoretical material. The student is able to name some ethical challenges in the field.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to acquire source material appropriate for visual communication. The student demonstrates that they is familiar with the selected theoretical subject and concepts. The student is able to apply theoretical material in the analysis of visual communication materials. The student is able to look at the role of visual communication as a social influencer and consider the possible cultural implications of visual representations. The student demonstrates an understanding of the specific features of visual communication in terms of meaning formation. The student is able to consider the ethical challenges of the field and the responsibility issues of a visual communication designer from a professional point of view.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to independently acquire, evaluate and utilize diverse source material for visual communication. The student is able to apply the theoretical material deservedly in the analysis of visual communication materials and to use the concepts fluently. The student is able to look at the role of visual communication as a social influencer and the possible cultural implications of visual performances from different perspectives. The student is able to comprehensively analyze the special features related to visual communication in terms of the formation of meanings. The student is able to consider the ethical challenges of the field and the professional responsibility issues of visual communication on a multi-level and spontaneous basis. The student is able to critically examine they own values ??and attitudes and outline their complex relationship with the work of a visual communication designer.
