Objective

The student knows the fundamentals of mechanics of materials, can design simple structures to withstand static loads.

Content

• Basic concepts of strength of materials
• Rod and beam structures
• Torsion
• Stress state and damage hypotheses
• Statically indeterminate structures
• Buckling of columns

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can calculate simple problems in strength of materials. The student can calculate the second moment of area. The student can calculate the buckling force of a rod.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student knows how to calculate stresses and deflections in beams. The student can calculate the shear stress and deflection of a torsion bar.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows how to analyse statically indeterminate structures. The student can analyse structures under combined loading.
