Objective
After completing the course, you will have a solid grasp of the key concepts and phenomena in analytical chemistry and organic chemistry. This will provide you with the ability to understand and solve problems in biotechnology and chemical engineering. You will acquire essential foundational knowledge for your major studies and be able to apply what you have learned in practical terms in your future professional tasks. This course is instrumental in enhancing your expertise and success in the field.
Content
Analytical chemistry:
• basics of sampling and sample treatment
• calibration methods
• introduction to instrumental analysis:
- absorption and emission spectroscopy
- chromatography
- microscopy (optical, SEM, TEM, STM, AFM)
- X-ray techniques: XRF, XRD
- electrochemical methods
- thermal analysis (TG, DSC etc.)
Improving the skills in general and analytical chemistry
Organic chemistry
• naming and molecular formulas
• isomerism: structural and stereoisomerism (including optical isomerism)
• the most relevant functional groups and their influence on the properties of organic substances
• typical reactions and reactions mechanisms of different functional groups
• the properties and behaviour of the most important organic substances in relevant application fields
Evaluation scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student is able to define and describe the concepts and phenomena included in the course in a qualitative way and to compute straightforward problems.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to understand and define or describe the concepts and phenomena discussed in the course in his own words; he also knows how to explain the origin and meaning of related equations and to critically evaluate the solutions obtained when solving related chemical problems.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to characterize and model phenomena discussed in the course on the basis of reasonable assumptions, as well as to analyze, evaluate and modify solutions for related chemical problems and the underlying model when needed.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
After completion of the course the student has sufficient understanding of the most important concepts and phenomena in analytical and organic chemistry and is thus able to understand and solve relevant problems in his own study field, to apply this understanding as a necessary basis in later studies and to utilize it in future professional tasks.
