Objective

The student is able to guide the learner’s instrumental learning in group tuition. The student is able to support learning in a motivational manner for both individuals and the group. The student is able to identify and solve challenges in learning processes, utilize group dynamics, and prepare meaningful learning assignments for the group. The student is able to creatively apply different musical elements to group tuition. The student is able to teach improvisation to a group considering the musical and stylistic contexts. The student is capable of reflecting on their pedagogical group tuition competence and conducting continuous professional development.

Content

Advanced content of group pedagogy and group dynamics, advanced pedagogy of improvisation, individual and collaborative reflection, observation of teaching and learning, ePortfolio, instrument group teaching practice.

Location and time

Teaching time for pedagogical and instrument-specific lectures is on Tuesdays between 13:00 and 16:00. On the front page of the course workspace, there is a link to the Lecture Schedule, which opens a Drive file containing the schedule, content, and teacher information for both common and instrument-specific lectures on different tabs.

COMMON LECTURES are scheduled on Tuesdays from 13:00 to 15:30 in room 522, as indicated in the timetable. The lectures are conducted only as in-person teaching, except for the "Music School as a Workplace" and "Job Application ABC" lectures, which will be held remotely.

INSTRUMENT-SPECIFIC LECTURES are scheduled for Tuesdays between 13:00 and 16:00.
If the information for your instrument is missing, please contact the responsible teacher for pedagogical studies for your instrument.

The times and location for TEACHING PRACTICE will be announced by the teacher responsible for instrument pedagogy/teaching practice for each instrument.

Exam schedules

The deadline for submitting teaching diaries and assignment submissions is May 3rd or after the completion of the teaching practice.
Teaching diaries must be submitted to the Tasks folder in the course workspace

Completion alternatives

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) based on work experience or previous studies, and the possibility to complete the course through projects will be agreed upon separately. Absences are compensated by completing the self-study assignments in the Tasks folder of the workspace.

PART 3: TEACHING PRACTICE

The teaching practice, to be completed during the spring (13x45 minutes), is conducted with two practice student groups or pairs. The arrangements and timing of the teaching practice are also agreed upon with the teacher responsible for the pedagogical studies.
The supervising teacher will observe each student's teaching practice 7x45 minutes during the spring and will hold a 15-minute feedback session after each observed lesson (or an equivalent amount).
The teaching practice diaries must be properly completed and submitted to the Tasks folder in the workspace by the end of the teaching practice, but no later than May 3rd.
All other course assignments must also be submitted by May 3rd at the latest.

OSA 2. INSTRUMENTTILUENNOT
- Kevään mittaan olevista instrumenttikohtaisista luennoista ja opetusharjoittelun järjestämisestä vastaa ja antaa lisätietoja kunkin instrumentin pedagogisista opinnoista vastaava opettaja. Instrumenttiluentojen aikataulut löytyvät

OSA 3 OPETUSHARJOITTELU
- Kevään aikana suoritettava opetusharjoittelu (13x45min) tehdään kahden harjoitusoppilasryhmän, tai -parin kanssa. Myös opetusharjoittelun järjestelyistä ja ajankohdasta sovitaan pedagogisista opinnoista vastaavan opettajan kanssa.
- Opetusharjoittelua ohjaava opettaja seuraa kevään aikana jokaisen opiskelijan opetusharjoittelua 7x45min ja käy seuraamansa tunnin jälkeen 15 min. palautekeskustelun (tai vastaava määrä).
- opetusharjoittelun päiväkirjat palautetaan asianmukaisesti täytettyinä opetusharjoittelun päätyttyä mutta viimeistään 3.5. työtilan Tehtävät- kansioon.

Myös opintojakson muut oppimistehtävät tulee olla palautettuina viimeistään 3.5.

Assessment methods and criteria

Continuous Assessment

The assessment is based on conducting lessons for two student groups in your own instrument and submitting the teaching diary.
Completion of lesson plans, learning tasks, and observation tasks.
100% attendance at common lectures; self-study assignments are available in the Tasks folder in case of absences.

Qualifications

The student knows group teaching methods and is able to conduct group tuition in their own instrument. The student is able to construct a culture of positive group dynamics and is able to identify learning processes both in individuals and the group. The student is able to apply diverse teaching methods in different learning situations. The student is able to choose appropriate musical and pedagogical materials considering their group’s needs. The student is able to give constructive group feedback while being supportive and respective of individual strengths. The student is able to evaluate how prepared the group is for improvisation and is able to apply different teaching methods to develop improvisation skills in the group.
